THE WORKSHOP
Weaving natural fibres is regarded by many as a regional treasure with skills passed down from generation to generation.
OBJECTIVES
CAPACITY BUILDING
Weaving sisal baskets is a traditional skill among women communities in the Taita-Taveta region. Through extensive capacity building, we aim to expand the existing weaving value chain adding a new material (banana fibres), new skills (such as rope making, hand-looming) and new value added products (such as ottomans and rugs).
WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
Gender equality is a basic human right but girls and women continue to face significant challenges all around the world. By providing capacity building and market access, we enable them to earn an income – and higher incomes bring healthier children, better education and improved well-being for their immediate family and broader community.
ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOODS
Women communities are heavily affected by climate-change induced droughts, that caused the loss of cattle, crops and traditional livelihoods. Through our weaving workshop, we will provide an alternative and reliable source of income.
